I live near the St. James General Store, which has been around since 1857. And it’s still active! While you can’t buy your grocery necessities, this general store houses the history of Long Island and New York.
A Bit of History

- Built by Ebenezer Smith in the late 1800s.
- Early customers consisted mainly of farmers and sailors.
- While it’s near the St. James Railroad Station, this store never attracted huge crowds.
- Still has the design that was common between the late 1880s to the 1910s.
The First Floor

You can find bars of soap to all sorts of candy on the first floor. The floors are made of old wood, and you can hear them creak every time you walk.

Before heading upstairs, you can view children’s toys and women’s accessories, from handbags to scarves.

The Second Floor

Book lovers rejoice! You’ll find books on the classics from Edgar Allen Poe to Louisa Mary Alcott. Also, plenty of historical books on the Victorian Age, Brooklyn, Long Island, and so much more reside here.

If you’re a fan of (late 19th century) history and enjoy walking through a time capsule, visit the St. James General Store!
